Discover Annecy

Its lake with blue-green waters and its canals that run through the old town gave it the nickname of Venice of the Alps

Brief History

 lethiou-vieille ville-annecy

Inhabited since prehistory, occupied by the Gaulish tribes of the Allobroges then by the Romans who founded Boutae, the city of oxen in 35 AD.

The castle of the Count of Savoie, rises from 1107 on the heights of Annecy.
It became the capital of the county of Geneva in the 14th century and was later given to the Count of Savoie
In 1860, the city belongs to France.

The Old Town

Very linked to water, natural rampart, natural resource and labour force, Annecy was shaped by the water and its urbanism is the witness of it. The old town with its traboules, hidden passages and entanglement of houses are characteristic. We still find today the medium-sized arteries (Porte Sainte Claire, Porte and Côte Perrière) that frame the old town of the rest of the agglomeration.
Its pedestrian streets (rue Sainte Claire, rue Carnot, rue Royale) as well as the old prisons and the castle are essential places for any visitor (See more)

The lake

14.6 km long (its turn is about 38 km), 40 m deep on average with an 80 m hole in La Puya, it is a glacial lake more than 18,000 years old. It is mainly fed by several rivers descending from the mountains that border it.
The Thiou meandering in the old town of Annecy serves as an outlet. He throws himself into the Fier, takes the Gorges du Fier to finally reach the Rhône river.

The mountains around the lake

Surrounded by mountains, Lake Annecy has the Bauges massif to the west (Roc des boeufs and Semnoz). The Massif des Bornes is located in the East (Les dents de Lanfon, the Tournette with its armchair shape and the Mont Baron next to Mount Veyrier - See more)
